The Tribute to G.Washington
As seen from the edge of the Tidal Basin walking toward the Jefferson Memorial.

Jefferson's Tribute
Tourists are always trying to get themselves in my photos.

Where's the Reverence?
I made Mary Lou strike this pose, likely against her will. But she's a good sport, and I always think these make better photos than just standing there like you're a monument yourself.

Jefferson's Tribute
We liked the Jefferson Memorial even more than the Lincoln Memorial, even though the Lincoln was larger, more architecturally impressive, and seemed to be much more in demand as evidenced by the large number of people arriving by the tour bus load; nevertheless, we enjoyed the Jefferson Memorial mostly because of the words he wrote that were inscribed on the walls. His words moved us more than Lincoln's, which is not to diminish the import of Lincoln's message, only to observe our reactions to what we saw and read.

Lincoln's Memorial
The Lincoln Memorial is at the opposite end of the National Mall from the Washington Monument. It is very impressive, and seemed to be the most attended memorial we visited. Jefferson's Memorial is open on four sides of the circular building allowing for a breeze or, at minimum, ventilation. Lincoln's is open only on the front, and by the time we had read the Gettysburg Address and his second inaugural speech we were drenched with sweat. A small price to pay, and we did so gladly. There were signs asking for quiet and respect, but the ignorant ignored this, creating a Disneyland effect with lots of laughter and photo ops. Should I be surprised?

Assuming Our Role As Tourists
Now, I put her up to this, AND we were NOT inside the Memorial Itself. Once inside, we were reverent.

World War II Monument
The World War II Monument, an impressive Memorial utilizing water. Mary Lou's father fought in World War II, and we discussed whether to dip her toes in the water in honor of her father, or to honor the signs which asked that she not do this. We decided that he would want her to, plus every one of The Great Unwashed was already sitting on the edge with their feet in the water, kids running around in it, and it was humid and in the upper nineties. Our intent was positive. I believe THIS monument was EVERY bit as impressive as the Jefferson or the Lincoln. NO monument is quite as impressive as The Washington Monument.

National Museum of American History
I needed a snack, and we didn't stay long in this Museum. We had already walked a gazillion miles, we were tired, hungry, and so we snapped this photo, and found a cafe. If the country doesn't fold financially in the next several months, I may go back for another visit.
